What If …

Addie: “Well, there’s people that eats up the whole Earth and all the people on it. Like the Bible with the locusts. Then there’s people that stand around and watch them do it. Sometimes I think it ain’t right to stand and watch them do it.”

Horace: “There’s something else in the Bible, Addie. Take us the foxes … the little foxes that spoil the vines … for our vines have tender grapes.” ~ The Little Foxes, by Lillian Hellman

I’m at my sister’s house. We’ve been going through the boxes of Mom’s photos and dividing them into appropriate piles. Sometimes we take breaks to watch a movie. The Little Foxes is one of the movies we watched and even though it takes place in the late 1800s, it’s eerily similar to what’s happening in the world today. And that got me thinking.

The next morning I woke up and it was the day of the State of the Union address by President Biden. I’m sure many country’s leaders around the world have similar type of address to their citizens. Today I was thinking about what President Biden might say in his speech, and I was hoping he’d remind those in Congress who want to block every law that would help people, that they are servants of the people. They are not there to gain power, or riches but to try to make the lives of the citizens they represent better.

Which led to the idea that it would be good if all politicians, from school boards, to city and state officials, would consider their jobs as a ministry. But as all good ideas do, it grew into, wouldn’t it be great if every single person on the planet approached their jobs as their ministry instead of trying to “eat the whole Earth”.

Losing my Mother has made me contemplative about her life. She was loved because she loved people. She was kind and always tried to include those who were not noticed, or who were actively shunned. I think she knew what it felt like to be left out and she wanted to spread as much love and acceptance to those around her as she could. I learned that from her. And I think it’s a good way to live.

Focusing on the needs of others and helping them, is a good way to help us heal our own wounds. I think my Mother learned that early on and continued to practice it all her life. It was her way of making the world a better place to live. She didn’t march or protest, but her way of standing up to those who are eating the Earth, was to love those who were suffering because of petty disregard.

I think I’m going to continue to do the same thing. After all, spreading love is much more rewarding than trying to end up with all the toys. I mean, once the greedy get all the wealth, will there be anyone left for them to share it with? That does not sound like fun to me.

Welcome new followers. I hope your week ahead is full of kindness and love.

Blessings,

Rita Gau’s review: Recently, I finished reading a book titled, The Space Between Time, by my friend, Lucinda Sage-Midgorden. It was the best book I’ve read in a long time. It kept me captivated, which I have not experienced from any other book for the past couple of years. I loved all the little gems of meaningful and what I call spiritual statements throughout the book. You know, those words that make you pause and think, and sometimes have an “aha” from or a deeper awareness about something. And it was entertaining and informational about some of the history in the 1800’s and yet, contemporary. It also reminded me of the importance of “living in community” and how important it is to help one another and be engaged in your community. Thank you Lucinda for a wonderful, entertaining and captivating book!

Life and Death

“For life and death are one, even as the river and sea are one.” ~ Khalil Gibran

It’s Friday, February 23rd as I write this and my Mom died this morning. She lived almost 20 years without my dad who died in mid-October, 2004. My youngest sister was with her last night and told me that Mom was calling Dad’s name and asking to be pulled out of her body. She was ready to go. And I think it’s a beautiful thing, when someone has lived a fulfilling life and they are ready to graduate to the next level. It’s hard for the those of us who are left behind though.

I’ve been with people during their dying process and sometimes it’s difficult and scary and sometimes it’s beautiful, but one thing I feel, is that only our bodies die. Who we really are transitions to a different plane. We get to be with our loved ones who have passed. Mom was the last one left of her generation in the family and I think she’s happy to be among Dad, her sister, and parents, my cousin Susan, and her brothers and sisters-in-law again.

It may sound weird, but I love when the family gathers at times like this. I love hugging each other and sharing stories through the tears. We remember the person who has passed and as we share memories, threads of love are wound around us. I felt those threads drawing us closer together last summer when we gathered to remember my cousin, Susan. And I felt it when we gathered to remember my father so many years ago. It happens during happy times too, like two summers ago when we celebrated Mom’s 90th birthday on the Oregon Coast. We laughed, talked, ate and allowed Mom to remember good times in her life. I got to spend a lot of time with her as other members of the family did a bit of site seeing. She was getting frail even then and my arthritic joints were bothering me so I took the time to just be with her. I’m so happy now that I did.

Barry and I made our reservations to go be with family this morning before we got the news. Now we’ll be there to help my sister take care of final tasks and share with other family, which means I won’t be posting here until we get back. That might be a couple of weeks.

Being human is a wondrous journey with so many experiences to explore. We can find meaning in everything that happens, or we can fight it all the way. I choose to be grateful for all the experiences of my life and all the people I have been able to know along the way.

Have a blessed time ahead.

Blessings,

One Life Touches So Many Others

“Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides.” ~ Lao Tzu

“Life and death matters, yes. And the question of how to behave in the world, how to go in the face of everything. Time is short and the water is rising.” ~ Raymond Carver

I had planned a very different post for today, but Thursday night I learned that one of my podcast guests, Kate Wallinga, died on Saturday February 10. She was not only my guest, but the host of the “Ignorance Was Bliss” podcast. We met on PodMatch and actually exchanged guesting on each other’s shows.

After our guest exchange, we connected on Facebook and early last year I discovered that she was ill. She’d contracted some strange gastrointestinal disease and was in and out of the hospital throughout the year. As Fall arrived, more and more of her body systems began to fail. In her last post on January 27, two weeks before she died, she and her husband shared the raw, honest truth about going through such a debilitating disease mostly alone. It was a heartbreaking beginning to a much longer post, but one thing that got to me was the fact that when she was in the hospital for the last time for 27 days in December and January, no one but her husband came to see her, not even her friends that live close by. She didn’t want her children to come because for part of the time, she had Covid and she didn’t want to pass that on to them.

Her last post is heartbreaking because she shares how her illness changed the way she saw herself and she didn’t recognize the person she’d become. On top of that she was alone during the day, mostly bedridden during her time at home between hospital visits. And that got me thinking. I have a friend who has been in the hospital several times since I’ve known him, and I have never gone to see him when he’s there. I’ve gone to plays he’s produced and acted in in between, but I’ve not gone to the hospital. What was wrong with me? Fortunately, my friend is healing nicely. However, as I wrote one or two weeks back, my mother’s health is failing. Maybe I should make the long trip to go see her now. My sister says that she’s not really aware of much. What a dilemma, spend the money and make two trips? Can I put a price on my Mom’s life? Not at all.

Back to Kate, the wonderful thing about her is that her podcast will always be available to listen to. I’ve listened to several of the 498 episodes. She has a unique way of looking at the world that I think you might enjoy. Listening to people’s stories is a great way to get a new perspective on what it means to be a human being. Her last post is both heartbreaking and hopeful and worth listening to. If you go by the tributes to her by her fellow podcasters and guests, she touched a lot of lives and made them better. Isn’t that what we all hope for? I know I do.

Welcome new followers and thank you to those who’ve been with me for awhile. I appreciate the energy you use reading my thoughts.

Blessings,

Lucinda Sage-Midgorden © 2024
