Being the Change

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

When I was a theatre student, I read several George Bernard Shaw plays. I loved his ideas. They aren’t very stagable, because there isn’t much action. They would make great novels because they are full of wonderful ideas that are different than conventional wisdom. My Fair Lady is based on Shaw’s play Pygmalion. It’s interesting that that particular play should come to my mind, because it’s a story that illustrates my mission.

Professor Henry Higgins is an intellectual genius, but he’s almost devoid of emotional intelligence. He thinks everyone should conform to the way he sees the world. He is particularly dismissive of women. Eliza, a street girl who becomes his student, understands human frailty and warmth much better than Henry does. The only good thing he does for her is to teach her how to speak properly, which helps her elevate herself on the social ladder. He’s a person who does not want to change his mind, whereas Eliza desperately wants to expand herself in everyway possible, and she does. In Pygmalion, Eliza does not go back to Higgins at the end of the play, she marries Freddie. I always assumed that she marries Freddie because he treats her with love and respect, even though he knows she’s from a lower class than his own. And, as I always do, I imagine that after the end of Shaw’s play, Eliza eventually comes to love and appreciate Freddie. Not only that, she helps him find meaningful occupations which help support the family, but also suit his upper class position.

Over the last few years my mission has become more clear, we need to pay more attention to our emotions than to our mental intellect. In my opinion, that’s the direction education should be going in. What good is going to Mars, or exploring space if we can’t get along with each other and in fact have leaders who threaten to blow the planet up? Only people who are emotionally intelligent have the opportunity to listen and learn from those who are on the opposite political, religious, and cultural spectrum from themselves.

Stories are one way we can learn to become emotionally intelligent because they take us on emotional journeys. We get to walk in the shoes of the characters, analyze their actions, and decisions. We get to see the outcomes of the choices they make and compare them to the choices we might make if we were in similar situations.

The other day I saw a quirky movie titled, Miss Meadows, (2014) staring Katie Holmes and James Badge Dale, about a young woman who is a substitute elementary teacher. She is also a vigilante. She is so kind, supportive, and protective of her students, but she’s not above killing people who are obvious threats to her children, or society at large. Oddly enough she falls in love with a sheriff in her town, who figures out that she’s the vigilante they’ve been seeking. We get to find out why Miss Meadows is adamant about killing people who threaten her students, or the members of her community and it’s a tragic story.

Now, I would never become a vigilante, but I could understand Miss Meadows motivation. The world can be a scary place, especially for children. So her need to protect them when she can resonates with me. She, of course, is a deeply wounded person who needs therapy desperately. In a perfect world, she’d get it and heal from her childhood trauma. But as of this moment, we don’t live in a perfect world and so Miss Meadows copes the best she can.

I wrote all of that to give you a glimpse into the reason I created my course, Saving the World One Story at a Time on Ûdemy. I’m including the trailer for my course here in case you might choose to take it, or share it with others. Here’s the link. https://www.udemy.com/course/saving-the-world-one-story-at-a-time/?referralCode=3F95529C1D400C795737

No matter what you decide, consuming stories gives us a chance to walk in someone else’s shoes and learn something new about what it means to be a human being.

My hope is that you have a wonderful and restful weekend and maybe read, watch, or listen to stories and learn something new.

Blessings,

“There are moments when all anxiety and stated toil are becalmed in the infinite leisure and repose of nature.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

I’m a contrarian. I balk at unnecessary rules and common wisdom. Things like, (sorry Ben Franklin) “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”. Okay, maybe good ole Ben wrote that just to entertain. But lately, I’ve begun to hate the whole idea that if you want a successful business you have to go, go, go, and do, do, do. I’m with Denise Austen, just do one important thing a day and over time, you will have accomplished a lot.

For the last few weeks that’s what I’ve been doing. One or two things on my creative projects and then making time for reading or watching movies, or documentaries, or whatever strikes my fancy. I mean, I kind of went crazy last year. I added a Patreon community and an online course to my established tasks of writing this blog and my novel, and doing my Story-Power podcast. Every time some business expert tells me I need to post on social media every day, or write newsletters to my mailing list, or whatever it is, I balk. My gut tells me I don’t need to do those things. At least not in the way they say. That’s the old way of making a business work. It might be good for younger people, but it’s just not for me.

So, today, since I’m not really in the mood to write this blog post, it is Saturday after all, I’m going to keep it short and remind everyone of the Tortoise and the Hare. I don’t mind spreading the word about my various creative projects slowly. Eventually they will be successful and that’s good enough for me. My main goal is to be a happy creator.

Have a great weekend. I hope you get to have some much needed leisure time.

Blessings,

Dream Messages

Tarantula Nebula

“Creativity is an intensely vulnerable gesture. All the risks and challenges are worth your efforts. This is a good time to go for it.” ~ Tarantula from spirit-animals.com

The other morning I had an extremely vivid dream just before waking. As a rule, my dreams are in black and white and are kind of a jumble. I don’t often remember them. So, if I have a vivid dream complete with colors and distinct images, I pay attention.

In this dream Barry and I were home, not the one we live in now. You know how dreams are. We were sitting on the couch and I had my feet up with a throw over them. I noticed several, maybe 10, tarantulas walking across the floor. I didn’t feel afraid, just curious and said to Barry, “How did all these tarantulas get into the house?” All I noticed before I woke up was how colorful they were. It was one of those dreams that make me go “hmmm”.

I tried to look up the spiritual significance of tarantulas that day, but didn’t find anything satisfactory. However a few days later I changed the wording of the search and found this site above, with a message that was exactly what I’d been feeling about my day to day work.

I have lots of creative balls in the air right now and I had begun to feel a little overwhelmed with the amount of extra social media posts I felt I needed to do. There was a part of me that said, “There is no need to tire myself out. All I need to do is one or two tasks a day. That will be like planting seeds.” And then I had the tarantula dream. The message of tarantula is to trust and allow things to unfold in their own good time. It was a confirmation that The Universe has my back and that I’ll receive guidance when it’s time to do something new.

That made me feel better because when I’ve taken marketing and promotion courses, the mantra is always the same. You have to work hard to let people know what you’re working on. It’s all about push, push, push. Now, I really know nothing about marketing, but there is just something about that idea that always felt wrong to me. It just seemed like that left very little time for being creative. If felt like there has to be a better way.

Even though I don’t want to spend hours marketing my work on social media, I do have a different mindset about self-promotion. It looks more like making meaningful connections with people. I love talking about the things I’m creating and I like hearing about what other people are doing too. If I can help them spread the word about their work, I hope they will do the same for me, and hopefully we’ll become friends along the way. That’s my approach now, to develop relationships with past podcast guests and fellow creatives I meet through social media and trust that The Universe will take care of the rest. To that end, I think I’ll take a rest today.

It’s beautiful Saturday here in Southern Arizona. We’ve had some much needed rain this past week. Today is mostly sunny which always brightens my mood.

I hope you are doing well and able to find time to be creative.

Blessings,

Are You Living the Life You Want?

“You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need.” ~ Vernon Howard

Billie: “I’m happy. I got everything I want. Two mink coats. Everything. If there’s somethin’ I want, I ask.”

Paul: “That’s good as long as you know what you want.”

Billie: “What? Are you trying to mix me up?” ~ Conversation from the movie, Born Yesterday (1950)

This week Barry and I watched two movies with similar themes; sometimes when we get what we think we want, something is missing. And what are the things that are most precious to you that you wouldn’t want to lose? The two movies were, Leap Year (2010) with Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, and Adam Scott. The other was Born Yesterday (1950) with Judy Holliday, William Holden, and Broderick Crawford. They are both romantic comedies with serious themes. The main characters in both are the women, who think they are living the life of their dreams, but as the stories go along, they discover that what they thought they wanted isn’t at all fulfilling. They are just kind of existing.

For Anna, Amy Adams character, she thought she wanted to live in the most posh apartment building in Boston with a husband who’s a doctor. But just as it looks like she’s going to get that, her life begins to fall apart. In this case, it’s good because she’s made her dreams come true with military precision not questioning whether or not she would be happy. At one point in the movie, Declan, played by Matthew Goode, her guide to Dublin so she can meet up with her boyfriend, asks her a question that shakes her world. “If your house was on fire and you had only thirty seconds to grab the most valuable thing, what would it be?” When Anna can’t answer that question, she realizes that maybe she hasn’t stopped to examine what she really wants out of life.

When Declan asked Anna that question, my first thought was our photos. In my case, photos represent valuable relationships. The sad thing for Anna is that she realizes she has very few meaningful relationships, not even with her boyfriend. She built a sham life. One that looks good from the outside but is not in any way emotionally fulfilling. In the end she has to make a choice between what she thought she wanted and the more exciting life that has emerged in front of her.

Judy Holliday’s character in Born Yesterday discovers the same thing, which the above quoted conversation indicates. Billie is the mistress of a shady business man, played by Broderick Crawford, who has gone to Washington D. C. to “buy” a congressman who will introduce a bill that will benefit his business holdings. He hires a journalist played by William Holden to educate Billie so that she’ll fit in with the Washington crowd, all the time completely ignorant of the fact that he too could benefit from an education.

After watching that movie, I thought it was time to take a look at my life. Am I happy and fulfilled? Do I have valuable relationships? Fortunately the answer is a resounding, “Yes”. But there was a time when I thought I had the perfect job, which was then yanked out from under me. I thought my life was ruined, but sometimes The Universe helps us find something better that we couldn’t even imagine existed. That’s what happened to me. It took a long time, but I am finally completely happy with my life and all of the creative things I’m doing.

All I know is that it’s good to take a step back every once in a while to see if our lives are the ones we truly want to be living. If not, maybe adjustments need to be made. And as I learned, if we ignore the warning signs, we are forced to decide what is most important to us.

Those are my short thoughts for today. Have a wonderful weekend.

Blessings,
